September 9, 2025

Thinking of becoming a hairstylist or barber in Canada? Whether you’re just graduating high school or changing careers, this guide will walk you through what it takes to enter the profession.
Step 1: Meet Basic Education Requirements
In most provinces, you’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent to enroll in a hairstyling or barbering program.
Step 2: Enroll in a Recognized Program
Choose a Ministry-approved college or private career school. Programs typically last 10–18 months and include both classroom instruction and practical experience.
Step 3: Complete Apprenticeship (if required)
In provinces like Ontario, you may need to complete apprenticeship hours under a licensed hairstylist before you can take your certification exam.
Step 4: Pass the Certification Exam
Once your training is complete, you’ll need to pass the Certificate of Qualification Exam to become licensed (specific names vary by province).
Step 5: Renew Your License Regularly
Many provinces require hairstylists to renew their certification every 1–3 years and sometimes complete continuing education.
Licensing Bodies by Province:
• Ontario: Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) → Skilled Trades Ontario
• British Columbia: Industry Training Authority (ITA)
• Alberta: Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT)
• Saskatchewan: Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC)
Pro tip: Some barbershops hire apprentices or students, so don’t hesitate to apply even while you’re still in school!
