What I like about Sport Clips, I don't have to worry about seasonality, I don't have to worry about cost of goods going up and down and being unpredictable, I can pretty much bank on the same type of revenue in January as I can in May as I can in July.

We are working for ourselves. I was able to leave the auto industry at the end of 2014 and it was one of the happiest moves I ever made.

In my own personal experience, the tipping point for me was attending Discovery Day and meeting the corporate team. It was the only Discovery Day that I went to that didn’t demand a check before I left. Sport Clips said, 'Go home, talk about it, think about it.' The values of treating others the way they want to be treated is the corporate culture, it’s not just on their business card – it’s the way it is.

After retiring from the corporate world, I wanted to continue to be engaged in the business world, but wanted something that matched my desire for a more balanced lifestyle. I saw that Sport Clips was entering Canada and believed that the concept would do well here. I am still very grateful for the outsized level of support we received, and continue to receive, in supporting the success of our Canadian stores.

One of our expectations when we bought into Sport Clips was that we wanted to own a business, but didn’t want to be in it every day. Sport Clips allows us to spend a few hours in our three stores per week. It gives us the freedom to do what we want to do, when we want to do it.

The startup costs with Sport Clips were about half of the others I was looking at in the franchise world. There wasn’t a lot of heavy expense in the equipment startup and the overhead and inventory costs were relatively low. Those were the things that were really encouraging to me.
